Organization
The Office of Environmental Health and Safety
is organized (see
Organization Chart
) into seven general areas of responsibility:

Hazardous Materials Safety
is responsible for assuring compliance with Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality rules governing
the use and disposal of Hazardous Materials on campus. The section provides training on hazardous
waste handling and disposal procedures; provides hazardous waste pickup services; and
conducts laboratory inspections to maintain campus compliance with ADEQ rules and regulations.

Biological Safety
is responsible for assuring that all university projects involving biological materials
conform to the guidelines and requirements set forth in the University of Arkansas Biological
Safety Manual, the United States Department of Health and Human Services Biosafety in Microbiological
and Biomedical Laboratories manual, and the National Institutes of Health Guidelines for Research
Involving Recombinant DNA. The section provides training in biosafety procedures, waste pickup
assistance, and biological safety consultation services.

Radiological Safety.
The Radiation Safety Section is responsible for assuring compliance with Nuclear
Regulatory Commission and Arkansas State Department of Health and Human Services regulations
governing the use of radioactive materials on campus. The section provides radiation safety
training, radioactive waste pickups, calibration services, and conducts a dosimetry program to
monitor personnel radiation exposure. The section is available for support on all campus
radiation issues.

Occupational Safety
The Occupational safety Section is responsible for assuring and maintaining safe work conditions
for university employees, and for assuring compliance with Occupational Safety and Health
Administration, Environmental Protection Agency, Arkansas Department of Labor, and Arkansas
Department of Environmental Quality standards and regulations. The section evaluates existing
safety programs for quality and effectiveness; conducts surveys for health, safety, and environmental
hazards; establishes accident prevention procedures; implements control measures to eliminate
or reduce workplace hazards; and establishes programs to improve health and safety performance.

Campus Safety
is responsible for assuring safe working conditions on campus for faculty, students, staff and the
general public and for maintaining campus compliance with Arkansas Department of Labor regulations.
Safe working conditions are promoted through hazards analysis, site inspections, accident
investigations, and safety education programs. The section is available for support on all campus
safety issues.

Fire Safety
The Fire Safety section is responsible for fire safety throughout the campus. The section
conducts inspections of campus buildings and facilities for compliance with established requirements
for fire safety; administers contracts for servicing fire extinguishers and fire fighting equipment;
assists in developing fire protection and emergency evacuation plans for campus buildings;
reviews plans for new construction or renovation projects to assure compliance with applicable
fire codes; provides training in the proper use of fire safety and emergency equipment; and
develops programs for fire prevention and fire safety education.

Pollution Prevention
The Pollution Prevention Section provides guidance and assistance to the university community in
eliminating or minimizing waste, facilitating pollution prevention projects, and identifying new
opportunities for waste reduction and recycling.
