Pollution Prevention
Lew Meyers
, Pollution Prevention Coordinator,
is the developer and coordinator of EH&S’s Pollution Prevention Program. Lew spent a 20 year career as
a nuclear submarine officer and has worked primarily as a software designer since his retirement from the
navy. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture from the University of Arkansas, and has been
employed by the University in the Office of Environmental Health and Safety since 2005. Lew has always
been dedicated to environmental stewardship. He was chairman of Earth Day activities at Naval Submarine
School, Groton, CT, while an instructor there in 1974 and in the ensuing years has devoted hundreds of hours
to various volunteer environmental efforts. During his employment with Environmental Health & Safety,
he has contributed to the low level radioactive waste cleanup efforts at the Harmon Road site and in the
Chemistry Building.
Building a successful pollution prevention program initially requires an accurate characterization of the
waste stream. This information can then be used as a baseline to measure the success of comprehensive
waste reduction efforts that focus on procedural changes, product substitution, recycling, and where
necessary, implementation of engineering controls. Lew is currently working on quantifying the
hazardous material waste stream.
Lew works closely with other partners in the University’s sustainability initiative, and serves as co-chair
of the of the Sustainability Council's Pollution Prevention and Waste Minimization Working Group.
